In connection with the case relating to sexual assault on tribal women, Superintendent of Police N. Bhaskaran has ordered the suspension of five police personnel attached to the Thirukkoilur police station.
They are Inspector Srinivasan, Special Sub-Inspector Ramanathan, Head Constable Dhanasekar, and police constables Bakthavatchalam and Karthikeyan.
However, the SP told The Hindu that in his report he had stated that action had been taken against them for violating custodial rules.
In other words, they should not have taken into their custody women after 6 p.m.
The rules prohibited even taking children into custody after 6 p.m.
(In this case it is alleged that four Irula women, residents of T. Mandapam in Thirukkoilur block, were taken in a police van at about 7 p.m. on November 22 and later dropped at their place at 8 a.m. on November 23).
As for the allegation of sexual assault, the SP said a magisterial inquiry was under way.
