Five persons, including a couple, their two children and a relative, died when their car collided with a tanker near Diguva Mangampet in Obulavaripalle mandal in Kadapa district on Friday night.

Raju Naik, 32, native of Bachupalle hamlet in Allagadda mandal in Kurnool district and working as a driver with a papaya trader Hemanth in Railway Kodur, his wife Soni Bai, 25, son Babu Naik and eight-month-old daughter lost their lives instantly and Raju Naik’s brother-in-law Durga Naik,26, succumbed to injuries in Ruia Hospital at Tirupati on Saturday. Another relative Ramesh Naik was severely injured and was undergoing treatment in Ruia Hospital. Soni Bai and the infant were flung on to the road due to the impact of the collision and the baby was crushed to death when another lorry ran over her.

The ill-fated family went to their native village to get photographed for Aadhar cards and were returning to Kodur when the accident occurred. The bodies of Raju Naik and Babu Naik were trapped in the mangled car and they were removed by the police with the help of local people under the supervision of Railway Kodur circle inspector Rasool Saheb.

Two others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Ruia Hospital.

While the tanker driver fled, police seized the documents of the vehicle. The bodies were sent to Rajampet Government hospital for post-mortem. Raju Naik’s eldest daughter Usha, who remained at home was the only survivor in the family.
