Close to 4.7 lakh students enrolled in the government schools are confirmed to be suffering with eye-related ailments.

This was revealed during the screening conducted in the government schools across the State under “Chinnari Choopu” programme by the Health Department in association with Rajiv Vidya Mission between October 29 and December 2.

Further screening to confirm the exact number of students with eye-related ailments would be held under the auspices of paramedical ophthalmic officers from December 7 and students would be given spectacles free of cost subsequently, Mission State Project Director V. Usharani said.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy will formally launch the programme by distributing spectacles to students at Lalita Kala Thoranam on Friday and the programme would be extended to other areas later. Students would be given opportunity to select frame of their choice, she said in a press release.
