Union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay has called for greater involvement of the private sector in the development of tourism in the country.

Inaugurating a seminar on tourism development, organised by the Kerala Classified Hotels and Restaurants Association here on Sunday, Mr. Sahay said at least three lakh employment opportunities would be created in the tourism sector within a short period.

The country would be able to double this number if private players came into the sector in a big way.

Mr. Sahay said the government was taking steps to ensure that maximum number of tourists reaching Asia visited India, and promised to look into the industry's demand for restoration of subsidies to the sector.
