Guwahati: Three persons, including a minor boy, were killed and 17 others, including five policemen, injured when the police opened fire to disperse a mob that set fire to a police station at Moirabari in central Assam's Morigaon district on Saturday.
Curfew was clamped at 4 p.m. on Saturday and will be in force till 8 a.m. on Sunday to prevent escalation of violence. The injured included eight civilians, according to Chief Secretary S. Kabilan.
The Government announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 3 lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased.
An additional chief secretary level probe has been ordered into the circumstances leading to the incident, Mr. Kabilan said.
He said that initially there was an altercation between two groups of students of a college over an accident.
The police had intervened to dissuade them from quarrelling following which some students and local residents attacked the police station.
Of the five policemen injured in the attack the condition of assistant sub-inspector Hamidul Khan was stated to be critical. Four personnel of the fire brigade were also injured.
