Twenty-three supporters of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who participated in the protest rally led by party leader Vaiko, were arrested on Friday on the charges of abusing the police, preventing them from discharging their duty and threatening them with dire consequences.
The police sources said that the provisions of the Prevention of Damage to the Public Property Act too were invoked against them for causing damage to the camera of a private person. Later, all of them were remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody.
It may be noted that when Mr Vaiko and the party men were proceeding to lay siege to the Neyveli Lignite Corporation on Friday with a view to stop power supply to Karnataka they were rounded up by the police.
Later, they were kept in a marriage hall.
