Also slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000

A man, who was pronounced guilty of rape, was sentenced to 7-year rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 50,000 on Saturday after a protracted legal battle lasting 18 years.

The prosecution case was that Okram Premjit, an autorickshaw driver, in 1992 came across the victim, who was waiting for a taxi or bus to return to her village at Patsoi, about 15 km away from Imphal.

Premjit volunteered to take her to her village.

In her complaint to the police, she said that she was repeatedly raped by Premjit the same night and the following morning.

But Premjit was released on bail five days later.

Undeterred, the victim and her widowed mother continued to fight for justice which they finally got.
