11 killed in road accident

Eleven persons, including two women, died and 17 sustained injuries when the mini-truck by which they were travelling collided with a lorry on State Highway 19 near Hittalanagenahalli village in Hiriyur taluk on Thursday.

The condition of five of the injured, who have been shifted to Chitradurga district hospital, is said to be critical.

Some 25 people, mostly from villages around Hiriyur, were said to be travelling by the mini-truck. They were returning from Hiriyur town after shopping for Ugadi.

According to the police, the mini-truck collided with the lorry coming from Tumkur around 6 p.m.

The police identified the dead as Balajja (70), Mailari (25), Ramesh (22), Tippeswamy (35), Karimsab (18), Devamma (45), Mahesh (38), Hanumanna (45), Sharadamma (46) and Ummanna (54). The identity of another victim, aged around 25, is yet to be ascertained. The police said that most of them died on the spot.

The other injured have been admitted to the Hiriyur government hospital.
