People of Kallatrupatti, Thalaiyur, Amma Kulathupatti and Thambinaickenpatti on Tuesday laid siege to the Thamaraipadi village panchayat president’s office in protest against a bid by private polytechnic and engineering colleges to discharge sewage water into the Kallar stream here.
They alleged that these institutions had started laying a pipeline connecting the riverbed with the institutions to discharge sewage water generated from the college and the hostels into the stream.
Ward member T. Saravanan, who accompanied the people, said that the college management had planned to lay pipes for a distance of 750 metres and called for speedy action.
Discharge of sewage water would pollute the stream and the groundwater table, he pointed out.
Petitions had been sent to the Chief Minister’s Grievance Cell and to the Collector’s office in this regard but no action had been taken so far, he added.
The sit-in by the people prevented panchayat officials and the president from leaving the office.
The agitation was withdrawn following Panchayat President A. Abdul Gaffer’s assurance of amicable settlement of the issue.
