The Madras High Court on Monday dispensed with the personal appearance of DMDK leader Vijayakant in eight defamation cases against him.

The charge was that he had defamed the Chief Minister in his speeches at various places.

Complaints had been filed by Public Prosecutors in the districts concerned on behalf of the Chief Minister.

Mr. Vijayakant had filed a writ petition seeking to declare Sections 199 (2) and (4) Cr.P.C. (Prosecution for defamation) as unconstitutional.
