The Corporation Middle School at Mannarai, near here, which was functioning in a two-room building accommodating classes up to Standard VIII, gets a new building.

The new block, constructed on a 50 cent premises. is situated a stone’s throw away from the old building.

A philanthropist donated the land and also gave the capital amount of Rs.60 lakh towards the construction of the building.

“The Corporation spent a total of Rs.10 lakh towards construction of a water tank, electrical works and for levelling the vacant spaces on the campus,” A. Subramaniam, Councillor of ward 32 under which the school comes, told The Hindu .

Began as a primary school in 1940, the institution was upgraded as a middle school in 2003 despite poor infrastructure.

The upgrading of the school was allowed despite the fact that there were only two small rooms to accommodate around 250 students in the roll and there were no compound walls, playground or staff room. The poor facilities led to high dropout rate with the attendance falling from over 250 students in 2003 to the present strength of 165.

Though now the school has moved to a spacious campus with adequate space for children to play, there is much left to be done by the Corporation administration if the school should attract more enrolment.

Presently, there are only seven rooms to accommodate students from Standard I to Standard VIII without a staff room.

Corporation sources said a noon-meal centre would be set up soon and water facilities to be augmented.
