BJP chief denied permission to visit riot-torn areas

Even as the Uttar Pradesh Government cracked down on the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs in riot-torn Muzaffarnagar, BJP president Rajnath Singh will lead a delegation of party leaders, MPs and MLAs to President Pranab Mukherjee today (Sunday) to draw his attention to the prevailing situation in the State, particularly in western U.P., where violence had spread to two districts and rural areas.

Mr. Singh was on Saturday denied permission to visit Muzaffarnagar even as he accused the Samajwadi Party government of selectively targeting his party leaders. The SP was spreading riots after it came to power, he alleged. Sources in the BJP said the party delegation would demand imposition of President’s rule in the State.“I wanted to meet the families of victims and take stock of the situation. But the district administration denied me permission saying my visit is not possible in the present circumstances,” the BJP president told journalists here.

He said he had set up a committee under BJP Legislature Party leader in U.P., Hukum Singh to prepare a report on the situation in riot-hit areas and the damage caused by violence.
