The Biomedical Technical Committee has decided that all hospitals, irrespective of their bed capacity, should get authorisation from the Pollution Control Board (PCB) in the interests of environment and public health.
A meeting chaired by the Secretary of the PCB, M. Ravichandra, directed the hospitals with more than 25 beds to get PCB authorisation to run their institutions. They were also told to procure resources and material for setting up sewage treatment plants.
In municipal areas, where the hospitals had come together to dispose their biomedical waste in common treatment facilities, they would have to take care that the waste was transported to the treatment plant everyday.
The committee examined the cases of 25 hospitals and recommended continuation of their functioning with certain conditions.
