The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Friday directed the State and Central governments to file responses on an application, which sought a direction to preserve the ecologically sensitive marshland in Pallikaranai.
The Tribunal passed the order on the application filed by V.Meganathan, advocate of Nanmangalam, who also sought a direction to the authorities to file a report as to the action plan/steps to be taken in saving the Pallikaranai marshland.
In the application, Mr. Meganathan said the ecological balance of the marsh had been facing threat from various quarters. The Chennai Corporation was using the site and marshland for dumping and burning garbage. He also stated that there were several encroachments on the marshland.
The applicant also submitted that apart from dumping by local bodies in the marshland, the Public Works Department was taking steps to build a taluk office on the land.
