Rare photos of Gandhi in Tamil Nadu, details of his stay and visits, and his speeches will be made available from October 2 in the form of a website put together by the Gandhi Study Circle. A. Annamalai, director of the centre, said the fact that many temples in Tamil Nadu had Gandhi statues in their gopurams pointed to the level of influence he wielded.
Gandhi visited Tamil Nadu at least 20 times between 1896 and 1946. Gandhi’s association with the people of Tamil Nadu began with his South African protests, as nearly 70 per cent of the beleaguered labourers there hailed from Tamil Nadu.
