The Environment Ministry has convened a meeting of several departments in the State to discuss the framing of a law regarding installation of mobile phone towers.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Minister for Environment and Planning S. Shivanna has said he has convened the meeting with representatives of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), the Urban Development Department, the Medical Education Department, the Indian Institute of Science and the Health and Family Welfare Department within a week.

The release cites a comprehensive study conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, on the adverse effects of rays emanating from mobile phone towers, including irreversible infertility, blood brain barrier, damage to DNA, ear damage, skin problems, increase in risk of cancer and risk to children and pregnant women.
