The Indian mobile phone market is expanding. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, this year, mobile shipments grew by 24 per cent, market research agency IDC stated. A bulk of this surge comes from the smartphone segment, which grew by 74 per cent year-on-year, the survey revealed. Samsung remains at the top spot in the market.

The IDC added that the competition between top international and local vendors remained prominent in the last quarter with Samsung, Micromax and Karbonn controlling almost two-thirds of the Indian smartphone market. The IDC release added that the market remained driven by low-cost devices.
