Extend support to persons with Down’s syndrome to lead normal lives is what Puttur Suresh Nayak (41) intends to convey to people through his campaign. He launched his campaign at a school in Mangalore on September 29 in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Puttur Suresh Nayak (41) suffers from Down’s syndrome, a developmental disorder, but it has not hindered him from becoming an achiever.

He created a record by reeling out 518 phone numbers with names of persons they belong to in just 72 minutes flat. This is among many of his records that have found a place in the Limca Book of World Records.

Now, Mr. Nayak is on a mission to create awareness among people to support children with mental disorders to lead normal lives. Through his magic shows in schools, Mr. Nayak is attempting to convey that children with developmental disorders also have a potential to become successful. All that is needed is that their parents need to identify and hone their talents.

Puttur Umesh Nayak, younger brother of Puttur Suresh Nayak, told presspersons here recently that Mr. Suresh Nayak has an Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of 22 as against the normal IQ of 90 to 100. And his mental development is equal to that of a three-and-a-half-year-old child while his social ability skills are equal to that of a child aged six and a half years. “But Suresh Nayak is multi-talented. He is a telephone operator in a stock brokerage firm and earns enough to sustain himself. In addition to that he engages himself as a volunteer at a temple and is part of a bhajan troupe,” Mr. Umesh Nayak said.

“I have come across instances where parents of special children do not want to identify themselves with them. Parents and family members should not develop such complexes. Special children should be encouraged to hone their talents,” Mr. Umesh Nayak said.
