The Church has always worked in tandem with politicians and governments, whenever they sought to represent the poor and address their grievances, said Mar George Alencherry, Major Archbiship of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.

Participating in a Christmas celebration organised by Cristhuva Nallenna Iyakkam, he said Christmas represented democracy and people’s upsurge.

Stating that it was a matter of pride that leaders representing all denominations of Christianity had come together to celebrate Christmas along with leaders of political parties, he thanked all governments and leaders who had unveiled schemes for the welfare of minorities.

DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin said the government led by M. Karunanidhi had extended all the student welfare schemes to students of minority institutions.

President of CNI Inigo Irudayaraj, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore George Antonysamy, and former Bishop A.M. Chinnappa were among those who participated in the celebrations.
