T.V. Mohandas Pai, director and head of Human Resources, Infosys Technologies, on Thursday said the Government should set up a fund of at least Rs. 1,000 crore in the coming budget to offer scholarships in higher education to poor and meritorious students.

Speaking to presspersons here after the announcement of Quarter 3 results of Infosys Technologies, Mr. Pai said he had already held discussions with Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in this regard. It was pertinent for the Government to set up this fund than establish government colleges, he said.

The fund would also enable poor students to get into higher education and would be an investment on enriching the human resources in the State.

Asked whether Infosys would partially fund such a project, he said: “Infosys is a business entity and only the Government can fund such projects using taxpayers' money.”

The Infosys Foundation is also funding 2,000 to 3,000 students in their endeavour to pursue higher education, Mr. Pai added.
