: As mobilising masses for public meetings and rallies is no small task in an era of public apathy towards politics and the availability of diverse forms of entertainment, the DMK’s newly appointed Youth Wing office-bearers have started to reach out to the people through street corner meetings.
In a short span of five days, they created a record of sorts by organising 5,000 such meetings, clocking a thousand a day.
Youth Wing general secretary and DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, who handpicked the office-bearers after interviewing around a lakh persons last year, chose to deploy only second-rung functionaries to address these meetings held between September 26 and 30.
“Instead of bringing people to our meetings, we went to them. We met them at railway stations, vegetable markets, small hamlets and faraway places that have not witnessed a political meeting for years,” said Ma. Subramanian, former Chennai Mayor, and one of the youth wing deputy secretaries.
Besides launching a campaign against the ruling AIADMK, these meetings were aimed at providing a strong ground to the new-office bearers, who have come to occupy important positions, thanks to what is called in party circles as the Stalin formula.
