Ten persons were arrested on the charge of illegally extracting sand from the beds of the Chikkahole and Suvarnavati in Chamarajanagar taluk on Tuesday. The authorities seized 75 sand-laden tipper lorries and six sand-laden tractors.
Following complaints from the public, the Deputy Commissioner had instructed Chamarajanagar tahsildar Chandrakant Bhajantri and Chamarajanagar East police to raid the spots where sand was being extracted illegally.
Mr. Bhajantri told journalists later that raids were conducted on five places and 50 sand-laden tipper lorries were seized. He said 25 sand-laden tipper lorries were seized from a farmhouse near Bevinatalapur village in the taluk. He said sand worth Rs. 3.37 lakh, valued at Rs. 10 lakh in black market, had been seized.

The district police have continued its crackdown on the sand mafia. A team led by Superintendent of Police R. Dileep conducted raids on several places on Monday night and seized 10 lorryloads of sand, eight bullock carts loaded with sand, two tipper lorries and two lorries. The police have urged the public to inform them if they come across illegal sand extraction and transportation in the district.
