Ending nuclear tests

Poland proposed in a General Assembly resolution circulated on October 24 that the issue of a cessation of nuclear weapons tests should be debated at a special session if no agreement was reached by April1. The document also would have the 99-member Assembly call upon “all States not to undertake any measures which could render the disarmament negotiations more difficult.” The Soviet Union has suggested that such a session be held in April, in Geneva or Leningrad, exclusively devoted to disarmament. Britain, the U. S. and the Soviet Union have been discussing for almost two years at Geneva the possibility of agreement on a treaty ending all nuclear weapons tests.

Demand for sterling

A new “gold rush” began in London on October 24 with the price soaring to almost 40 dollars a fine ounce against the “official” 35 dollars paid by the United States. The fresh scramble was stimulated by some European buyers who ordered dealers to buy gold “at best” – that is, without any limit on what they were prepared to pay. Dealers said that sort of buying had never occurred before in the London gold market. Sterling also turned harder in London this morning. This buying of sterling, Reuters Financial Editor said, was partly actuated by the same general considerations as actuated the buying of gold. Also, when foreigners bought gold in London they had to buy the sterling to pay for it.
