Farm output

The Planning Commission which met on May 8 with the Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, in the chair noted with some concern the fact that the rate of growth in agricultural productivity was extremely slow during the last six months and resolved that immediate steps should be taken in such directions as credit facilities to farmers, more efficient system of supply of essential commodities such as fertilizers, quality seeds and agricultural implements. While this had been the general defect, the Commission also noted the fact that the administrative machinery needed improvement, particularly at the State and local levels. The Commission which reviewed the economic development programmes during the past six months noted with satisfaction that there was improvement in the power and transport position.

Outlook for cotton

The long-term position of cotton as a textile fibre was encouraging and the outlook for 1963-64 might be more reassuring than during the present season, according to the policy statement adopted by the 22{+n}{+d}plenary session of the International Cotton Advisory Committee which concluded its deliberations in Bangalore on May 8 on a note of “cautious optimism.” The statement said the increase in world population and rising incomes should provide cotton with ample opportunities, especially in countries where the per capita consumption was low and where for climatic and other reasons, cotton was particularly suitable.

Bastar ruler’s property

About 300 Adivasi supporters of the deposed Bastar Ruler, Mr. Pravin Chandra Bhanjdeo, stormed the Court of Wards Office on Monday night, according to police reports on May 8. The Adivasis under the leadership of tribal chiefs like Mangal Manjhi have been agitating in recent weeks for getting the properties of the erstwhile Maharaja of Bastar released from the custody of the Court of Wards. Police said that Monday’s attack on the Court of Wards office in the palace compound was presumably “an indication of the tribals’ determination to force the issue.”
