: The attempt to search for the nature of one's Self (Atma Tatva) is most difficult and not easily attainable. Even to be motivated to look inwards and probe this mysterious aspect within us and venture to learn about these esoteric matters requires the effects of one's good deeds done in the past births. To be born as a human being is itself a great blessing and it is important for a Jivatma to realise this truth and try and make good use of this opportunity.

A study of the import of the Brahmasutra is sure to encourage a Jivatma to fashion his lifestyle in such a manner that he could make it his final birth and attain liberation, said Sri Goda Venkateswara Sastrigal in a lecture.

The Upanishads are the storehouse of Vedanta Sastras. There are many Upanishads and of them 108 are important and of these 10 are considered fundamental. It is believed that Sage Vyasa composed the Brahmasutra comprising over 500 sutras, as a concise presentation of the 10 principal Upanishads. The main enquiry is regarding the nature of individual Self, the world in which the Jivatma lives, and the underlying truth and relationship between all this. With reference to the Jivatma, the nature of Samsara and of the joy and sorrow inherent in it, are analysed, and in addition, the ways by which the Jivatma can detach itself from the endless cycle of Samsara are also shown. Man's suffering is hinged to the fact that he thinks he is the body and fails to see the subtle Self within that is the force behind the very existence of his body. This knowledge has to become ingrained in his consciousness if he chooses the path to salvation.

Adi Sankara's commentary offers a very clear interpretation of the Brahmasutra from the Advaitic point of view and every reading of his explanation adds to one's attempt to fathom this unlimited mine of knowledge. According to Adi Sankara, there is one and only Absolute Brahman who is the essence of Sat (Eternal Truth), Chit (Universal Consciousness) and Ananda (Bliss). The created universe is an apparent modification of the Supreme Brahman, which is the only Reality. So, what appears as this universe is because of Maya.
