Justice Ramesh Ranganathan of the High Court on Tuesday expressed deep anguish and distress at the way the police officers of Prakasam district were handling the case pertaining to abuse and assault of a couple by the police personnel and the way they were being treated with “velvet glove”. Police personnel of Kothapatnam police station had allegedly acted inhumanly against Gowtham Gandhi and his wife when they questioned a driver of an APSRTC bus that had hit their motorcycle. They approached the High Court complaining that the police were using filthy language against the couple including questioning the character and beating up the man brutally. Initially, the district police administration had tried to cover up the issue claiming that Mr. Gandhi was drunk and had prevented the government servant (driver) from discharging his duties. The SP was summoned to the High Court and the Judge had ordered CID enquiry. The CID probe had revealed that the petitioner was beaten up in the police station and a medical report disclosed that he was not drunk. Later, a case was registered against the police at the instance of higher officials and status report was submitted to the court. - Legal Correspondent
