The Films Division of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has withdrawn with immediate effect its two-reel documentary entitled “Pilgrimage Into Freedom” following protests from South India that it completely ignored the role of the people of the South in the freedom movement. The Films Division said in Bombay on September 4 that “necessary corrections will be made” by re-editing it after which the documentary will be released. The documentary, produced for the occasion of the 1857 centenary celebrations and released on August 15, was originally intended to confine itself to the places of historical importance associated with the 1857 freedom struggle, but later it was enlarged to cover major events of Indian history after 1857 until the achievement of freedom.
