At least 20 huge tidal waves thundering across the Pacific from quake-stricken Chile killed 800 people in the region of Sendai, port on the east coast of Japan's main island according to latest reports reaching in Tokyo on May 24. After Chile's three days of earthquake terror, with fires, floods and volcanic eruption, the picture emerging is one of the greatest natural disasters of modern times. The full extent of the damage cannot yet be measured. Many seaside towns and villages of the Japanese east coast were inundated.
