Dr. S. Parthasarathy, head of the acoustics division of the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, has been elected President of the Physics Section of the Indian Science Congress for 1959. Dr. Parthasarathy is well-known for the pioneering work he has done at the N.P.L. on Thermosonics, which is a branch of acoustics dealing with the relation between sound and heat energies and its application in physics and chemistry. After a period of rather unsystematic study, this branch of science has now resolved itself into clear-cut topics and opened up new vistas.
