The U.S. Defence Secretary Mr. Thomas Gates, said in Washington on January 31 that U.S. was “in a first rate, first position” in overall defence strength compared with the Soviet Union. In a recorded television programme Mr. Gates said the gap between the U.S. and Russia in inter-continental ballistic missiles was being offset in other ways. He said the Soviet Union would have “moderately more” missiles in production and operation than the U.S. until the U.S. began to catch up in 1962.
