there being no issue on December 26

Prime Minister Nehru on December 25 stressed the necessity of conducting research in mathematics which, he said, was the foundation of all sciences. Mr. Nehru said he was not satisfied with the work being done with regard to various sciences in Indian universities. “Our universities might perhaps concentrate on particular types and specialisations apart from general teaching. I am talking of high class research. If universities concentrate, by some kind of mutual consultation, they could take up different subjects suited to them so that the results might be better,” he added. Inaugurating the 25th conference of the Indian Mathematical Society, Mr. Nehru said every person knew how basic and important mathematics was in the development of modern science.
