There was a mild uproar in the Lok Sabha on December 16 when Prime Minister Nehru suggested to the Speaker, as Leader of the House, to take action against members on the opposition benches who were repeatedly interrupting the Chair and obstructing the proceedings of the House. This was one of the rare occasions in the history of the Lok Sabha when the Prime Minister in his capacity as Leader of the House asked the Speaker to proceed against members who defied the Chair and behaved in a manner which was not in keeping with the dignity of the House. Mr. Nehru said that he had been constrained to do so as the Speaker himself had asked him some time back to assist the Chair in keeping order in the House.
