K. Ilangovan, (57), secretary of Public Health Department Employees Co-operative Savings and Credit Society, allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison on Saturday.
According to the police, Ilangovan had been appointed as Returning Officer for conducting co-operative elections to the Co-operative Society of Highways Department at Srinivasapuram.
The elections are to be held on April 12. On Saturday, he allegedly consumed poison at a palm grove near his house.
He was admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital and is being treated.
His relatives alleged that two AIADMK persons had threatened him that he might stand to lose his retirement benefits if he did not get the nomination papers for co-operative elections from two candidates recommended by them.
Tamil University police have registered a case and are investigating.
