Cooperative audit officials have unearthed a fraud amounting to Rs. 49 lakh at the Kinathukadavu branch of the central cooperative bank.
The officials have also lodged a complaint with the Commercial Crime Investigation police.
According to sources, the fraud came to light when jewellery a farmer had pledged to avail of jewellery loan went missing. The farmer paid the dues and demanded the jewellery.
When then branch officials found the jewellery missing, they informed the higher officials, who, after audit, discovered that 2,331 gm jewellery worth Rs. 49 lakh were missing from the vaults. They are reportedly questioning the jewellery assessor.
Arrested
Thudiyalur police have arrested a 22-year-old youth on charges of sexual abuse. The police said that Prakash, a resident of Perumal Koil Street, Thudiyalur, had sexually abused his tenant’s daughter after promising to marry her. The woman lodged a complaint with them after her efforts to persuade Prakash to marry her failed. The police remanded him in custody.
Man commits suicide
A 22-year-old man committed suicide by consuming liquor laced with poison on Saturday.
The Ukkadam police said that Sirajudeen of Usman Colony, Podanur, resorted to the extreme step after a marital discord. He had sold his wife’s seven sovereign jewellery to purchase liquor. This had led to frequent quarrels between the couple.
On Saturday, Sirajudeen’s father had also condemned his behaviour.
After consuming the poison-laced liquor, he had informed his friends, who rushed him to a private hospital.
From there his friends took him to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The police have registered a case in this connection.
Car driver held
Traffic Investigation Wing police have arrested car driver Sudarshan Vairamuthu, 22, of Ganapathy on charges of rash and negligent driving.
The police said that he knocked down fish vendor Selvaraj, 27, of Rathinapuri on Sunday morning when the latter was on his way to the Ukkadam fish market to buy fish for the day’s sale.
The police said that the accident took place around 4 a.m. on Cross Cut Road.
The fish vendor died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
Bar worker arrested
Singanallur police have arrested Manikandan, 25, an employee of a liquor bar in the area, on charges of selling liquor without permission.
The police said that after the permitted closing time, he kept the bar open and sold liquor.
This came to light when the Singanallur police were on their routine rounds. The police said that they recovered 12 liquor bottles and Rs. 2,470.
Rescued man dies
A middle-aged man, who was found with injuries on the Podanur-Madukkarai stretch of railway track and rescued on July 20, succumbed to injuries at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Sunday. The railway police said that they were trying to ascertain his identity.
