Thermal power station
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, President, inaugurating the first thermal power station at Neyveli, near Madras on August 5, said that balanced regional development was absolutely essential for national unity and integration. He said: “No part of the country should be made to feel that it is being treated as a poor relation. Every part of the country has a right to national strength, national prosperity, national income and wealth.” Describing electricity as a symbol of modernisation, Dr. Radhakrishnan gave the following slogan for the country’s development: “Panchayat and Power.” The President said that he looked upon industrialisation now going on in the country as something in consonance with the genuine needs of the teeming millions of the country.

Marilyn Monroe dead
Marilyn Monroe is dead. The little orphanage girl who became the modern “Love Goddess” of the Hollywood screen was found dead in bed at her home in Los Angeles on August 5. The Coroner’s office said, she died after an overdose of sleeping tablets. A police officer said no notes were found. Doctors who broke into the bedroom through an outside window found her with the sheets pulled up around her neck. She was holding the receiver of her telephone in her hand.
The doctors were alerted by her housekeeper, Mrs. Eunice Murray, who told police she saw a light under the door of the actress’s bedroom at midnight. When the light was still on three hours later, she tried the door and found it locked.
Miss Monroe had been married three times to a Los Angeles policeman, James Dougherty, to baseball player Joe Dimaggio and then to author and playwright Arthur Miller.
