A state of emergency was declared in Blantyre (Nyasaland) on March 3, and Mr. Stonehouse, British Labour Member of Parliament, was deported from Northern Rhodesia to Tanganyika. The state of emergency in Nyasaland, which follows a similar measure in Southern Rhodesia last week, was announced by the Governor Sir Robert Armitage. He said in a broadcast, he had declared it because of actions by leaders of the African National Congress which day by day became increasingly violent.
