The States Reorganisation Bill was taken up for consideration by the Lok Sabha on April 23. The Home Minister, Pandit Pant, moving for reference of the Bill to a joint select committee briefly touched upon its development since the publication of the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission in October last year and the decisions taken by the Government. He said no reference to Bengal and Bihar had been made in the Bill and a separate measure would be introduced to implement any agreement that might be voluntarily reached between the two States. The Andhra and Hyderabad Assemblies had agreed to have a new name for the merged State; instead of Andhra-Telengana, the name of the new State may be either Andhra Desa or Andhra Pradesh.
