SINGAPORE: Myanmar’s celebrated democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi is in need of urgent medical attention, according to a spokesman of her party. Ms. Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Laureate, remains under house arrest in Yangon, under the orders of Myanmar’s military rulers.

U Nyan Win, spokesman for her National League for Democracy (NLD), told The Hindu from Yangon on Saturday that her ill-health was causing concern.

Mr. Nyan Win said he was told by her physician that the pro-democracy leader was suffering from problems relating to blood pressure and dehydration. He urged Myanmar’s military rulers to allow the female physician regular access to Ms. Suu Kyi.

The junta, Mr. Nyan Win said, had not so far responded to the calls from the international community to release her from prolonged house arrest.

There was also no response to her individual appeal for personal freedom, he said.
