Political tensions flared in Papua New Guinea on Thursday when an ex-soldier loyal to Michael Somare staged a mutiny to declare himself military chief and demand the veteran leader's reinstatement.

The move appeared to be connected with a power struggle between Mr. Somare, ousted as Prime Minister last year, and Premier Peter O'Neill over leadership of the resource-rich but impoverished country. Former Colonel Yaura Sasa led a pre-dawn mutiny. — AFP
