A turf war between militant groups in the Tirah Valley of Khyber tribal agency left upwards of 25 people dead on Friday and the clashes were continuing late into the night.

With the area out-of-bounds for even the local media, details were sketchy but from all accounts the clashes were an attempt by an anti-Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group to gain control over the area.

According to Dawn.com, the gun-battle began on Thursday evening between TTP and Ansarul Islam in the Maidan village of Tirah Valley. Ansarul Islam spokesman was quoted as saying three TTP bases in the village had been captured by his outfit and fighting was on for control over the fourth.

Besides being a turf war, Ansarul Islam spokesman also said his group wanted to flush out the TTP from the area because it was targeting mosques and public places, and killing innocent Muslims in the name of religion.
