Hours after the opposition announced it would undertake its third spell of hartal from Sunday, this time for 72-hours, additional police were deployed at the Gulshan office and residence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The 18-party opposition combine led by Khaleda Zia has enforced 60-hour hartal s twice in two weeks. Marked by violence, theyclaimed at least 20 lives and caused massive destruction of properties.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme on Friday evening following a secretary general level meeting of the alliance.

However, the news of the deployment has further escalated political tension arising from the standoff between the two major political parties over a poll-time caretaker government.

The deployment was done in the backdrop of a heightening political tension. The opposition has threatened a “mass uprising” to topple the government for refusing to concede its demand of having the next parliamentary election overseen by a caretaker government. The elections must be held by January 24 next year.
