Sir Elton John, the famously unconventional British pop singer, and his civil partner David Furnish, a film-maker, have become the first gay couple to be shortlisted for this year's Celebrity Dad of the Year award which recognises “balancing a hectic public life with the demands of parenting''. The couple, who became parents last Christmas when their son Zachary was born through a surrogate mother, were reported to be “thrilled''. Sir Elton (63) has often spoken of his parental skills and how he wants five-month-old Zachary to grow up as a “normal'' child, not distracted by the stardom of his parents.
“I so value my own childhood now, and we want to give Zachary — as much as we possibly can — the same thing. A solid old-fashioned childhood, if you like. I know it'll be hard with my life, but we want him to have that same normality and for things in life to have real value. So we don't intend to spoil him — we're going to try to give him a fun, carefree time of innocence, freedom, love and stability,'' he said. The nomination pits the couple against a formidable line up of headline-grabbing celebrities, including footballers Wayne Rooney and David Beckham.
