COLOMBO: The military claimed that at least 46 LTTE cadres were killed in intense fighting during the last 24 hours in the north and east.

A Defence Ministry report said the Special Forces beat an LTTE movement attempting to breach the forward defences west of Omantahi, killing 13 terrorists, while injuring over a dozen in a fierce duel on Saturday.

Initially, two LTTE cadres were killed attempting to infiltrate the defence lines. Later, the elite forces engaged a “large column of terrorists” between Madhu and Omanthai, when they tried to enter the liberated areas.

Separately, the Ministry said commando units engaged in the Thoppigala offensive “braved their way through rocky terrain, land mines, death traps and rough weather” to reach the boundaries of the LTTE’s Beirut camp.

It said the “Beirut complex” is the last LTTE stronghold in the eastern province.

Meanwhile, TamilNet reported that thousands of troops were involved in a cordon and search operation in Kurunakar in Jaffna Municipality and in the adjoining coastal areas on Saturday. It said this was the second such operation in the last two days.
