Kathmandu: Actress Manisha Koirala's father Prakash Koirala, a loyalist of King Gyanendra, has floated a new party to contest the Constituent Assembly elections that will decide the fate of the monarchy in Nepal.

As many as 62 parties have registered with the Election Commission, seeking formal recognition to participate in the polls, with the deadline expiring on Friday.

Mr. Prakash, who is the son of Nepal's first elected Premier Bishweshwor Prasad and nephew of incumbent Girija Prasad Koirala, registered his Nepali Congress (Rashtrabadi) at the Election Commission office on Friday.

A Minister in the erstwhile royal Cabinet, Mr. Prakash was shown the door by the Nepali Congress for supporting King Gyanendra.

At least two dozen pro-King parties including the one belonging to Mr. Prakash have been registered.

The government had set June 20 as the election date, but it was postponed at the request of the Election Commission, which sought more time for preparations. PTI
