MANILA: The Philippine military said on Wednesday that a key sub-commander of the Abu Sayyaf terror group was killed in a military operation in Mindanao on Tuesday. Military spokesman Bartolome Bacarro said Jainal Antel Sali Jr., alias Abu Soleiman, who was wanted by the United States, with a $5-million bounty for killing two Americans, is confirmed dead. The death of Sali was confirmed by a witness who identified the body recovered after Tuesday's encounter with army troops in Sulu, 900 km south of Manila. Sali was implicated in the kidnapping and killing of an American tourist in 2001 and an American missionary in 2002. Filipino authorities filed charges against Sali and two other leaders for their involvement in a series of bombings in October 2002 in Zamboanga city, southwest Philippines. Xinhua
