YMCA Madurai lays on clay courts to lure tennis lovers

The YMCA Sports and Games Center was inaugurated by Dieter Stockle, Chairman of the German YMCA International Committee, at Alagappan Nagar here on Saturday.

The YMCA, Madurai has laid four tennis clay courts on its premises and this is the only clay facility available in southern Tamil Nadu.

With the cooperation of the Madurai Tennis Foundation (MTF), a district body affiliated to Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA), YMCA has elaborate plans to promote tennis in Madurai.

To start with, YMCA is conducting the RR Memorial Tennis tournament for boys in the under-16 and 18 categories from January 28 to February 2.

The qualifying rounds will commence on 26th January. This event falls in the AITA Tennis calendar under Junior Tennis CS.

In March, it will conduct TVS ITF Futures tournament under the auspices of AITA, TNTA and MTF. The prize money will be $10000. Going by the experience of last year at least fifty percent of the players will be from foreign countries with a world ranking of around 300.

This tournament will be a rare feast for tennis lovers.

A tennis training programme has also been organised for students. Further, YMCA will conduct an advanced training program for talented youngsters and international coaches from Spain and other European countries will train them. Program fees and other details will be available in the first week of March.
