The International Centre for Free & Open Source Software (ICFOSS) is organising a series of workshops to promote the development of applications for the Aakash tablet scheduled to be rolled out across the nation by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Developed by a team at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, Aakash runs on dual Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)-based operating systems—Android and Ubuntu 12— and applications can be developed on either of these platforms.
The workshops will be organised as part of the incubation support programme of ICFOSS, says a pressnote.
The first workshop, scheduled for February 16 and 17, will be held at the Technopark here.
It will benefit independent developers, students, and information technology companies who want to develop applications on Aakash.
Students to benefit
The Ministry plans to distribute Aakash at a subsidized price to about 50 lakh students across the country over the next few months.
The device is expected to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in a nation-wide e-learning programme.
Besides these technology aspects, the workshop will also cover marketing and release mechanisms for the apps developed for the platform. For more details, visit: icfoss.org/aakash.html or call 04712700012. Tha mail id is email@example.com.
