Devika Sajeevan danced her way gracefully to two prizes at the 53rd State School Art Festival. The Plus One student from St. Teresa’s AIHSS (Kannur) came first in Mohiniyattom and second in Bharatanatyam.
She is disappointed that she could not win a place in Kuchipudi, her favourite form of classical dance. “I got an ‘A’ grade, but I wanted to win a prize, and everyone said I had danced pretty well to ‘Radha sametha Krishna…’,” said Devika.
“But I was really happy to win Mohiniyattom, in which the competition was really tough.”
In Mohiniyattom, she did ‘Gandhari vilaapam’, choreographed by her guru Kalamandalam Leelamani. “She also choreographed a different item for me in Bharatanatyam – ‘Chilappathikaram’,” said Devika, who has been winning prizes at the State festival for the last three years.
“Last year at Thrissur, I had come first in Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi and second in Bharatanatyam,” she said.
“I have been dancing since my LKG days and have always wanted to be a dancer.”
