Syria officially becomes OPCW member
Beginning Monday, Syria officially became a member of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
The OPCW’s basic document — the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, also known as the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), for short - will now apply to the strife- torn nation.
For several years, the OPCW has been calling on Syrian authorities to join the regime to control chemical weapons but until recently there was no official response.
OPCW Director- General Ahmet Uzumcu confirmed on September 13 this year the receipt of an application from Syria for accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Syria becomes the 190th member-state of the OPCW. The signatory countries account for almost 98 percent of the world’s population.IANS
