Sunday was a day of away wins in the Spanish Liga, with Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Elche all winning on the road.
The day started with Granada crashing 2-0 at home to Getafe, who are now fifth.
Getafe dominated from the start but needed a stroke of luck to take the lead, two minutes into the second half. Getafe winger Pedro Leon centred from the right and Granada’s Colombian defender Jeison Murillo clumsily sliced the ball into his own net.
Seven minutes later, with the Granada defence looking shaky, Pablo Sarabia set up Leon to make it 2-0 with a classy finish.
Granada had defender Pape Diakhate harshly sent off, and never looked capable of saving the match.
Then Rayo Vallecano won 1-0 at bottom team Almeria, with Rayo defender Alejandro Galvez scoring the only goal 12 minutes from time with a blistering long-range free-kick.
Later on Sunday, lively Elche moved up to ninth with a 2-1 win at Real Betis, who are now 15th.
Manu del Moral and Fidel gave Elche an early 2-0 lead, only for Jorge Molina to pull a goal back for Betis just before half-time.
Elche then had defender Domingo Cisma sent off, but still managed to hold out for the win.
The only home team to avoid defeat was Valladolid, who battled out a 2-2 draw against Sevilla thanks to late goals from Manucho and Patrick Ebert.
Sevilla had taken a 2-0 lead on goals from Carlos Bacca and Alberto Moreno. The draw left Valladolid fourth from bottom and Sevilla 10th.DPA
